Thao is the last ex-officer to be convicted for aiding in the murder of George Floyd

Post Date: May 8, 2023

Tou Thao is the former Minneapolis police officer who held the bystanders back while his co-officers held down George Floyd who was dying. Thao was convicted of aiding and abetting manslaughter on May 1, 2023. He had already been convicted in federal court of violating George Floyd’s civil rights, and was the last of four former officers facing judgment in state court for Floyd’s murder.

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act is stalled at this point because of the Republican’s opposition to the legislation, for the last couple years. The legislation aims to eliminate misconduct, racial discrimination and excessive force in policing nationwide.

The legislation would ban the use of chokeholds and end the “qualified immunity” that protects officers from lawsuits, just to name a few of the many matters that police officers avoid being held accountable for.
