There are a number of Awareness Events that are celebrated in the month of June.


JUNETEENTH, aka Freedom Day, [observed on June 19th]. It marks the June 19, 1865 date when the news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas, nearly 3 years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the document. The Union Army arrived in Galveston, Texas ordering that slavery end in the “Lone Star State!”


LGBTQ+ Pride Month – June is the month to celebrate and recognize Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month in honor of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history; locally, nationally, and internationally.


PTSD Awareness Month – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects about 12 million adults every year. It is typically associated with soldier’s traumatic experiences, but many more Americans who have witnesses or experienced life-threatening and/or traumatic events.


GUN VIOLENCE Awareness Month – June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month. This event is to honor survivors and victims of gun violence. Also, June celebrates National Gun Violence Awareness Day, which is known as Wear Orange Day on the first Friday in June.


ALZHEIMER’S & BRAIN Awareness Month - June is recognized as Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month to bring attention to and spread the word about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related conditions. The Alzheimer’s Association states that worldwide, there are more than 55 million people who are living with Alzheimer’s or some other form of dementia.


IMMIGRANT HERTIAGE Month aims to honor and recognize the rich contributions and diverse cultures that immigrants and their descendants have made to our shared history and country. The designation of Immigrant Heritage Month began in 2014, when former President Barack Obama issued a presidential proclamation establishing June as National Immigrant Heritage Month.


MEN’S HEALTH Awareness Month - The month of June brings awareness to the health of men and boys and encourages them to implement healthy practices in their lives. In general, men in the U.S. are expected to live nearly six years less than women and non-Hispanic Black and American Indian/Alaska Native men have a lower life expectancy than non-Hispanic white men. Many diseases that disproportionately impact men are preventable through regular doctor’s visits and healthy lifestyle choices; however, many men report not getting regular health screenings and struggle to find services that could help them make informed decisions about their health.


WORLD ELDER ABUSE Awareness Day - (WEAAD) is celebrated each year on June 15th globally; providing an opportunity for communities to stand together against the abuse, mistreatment and neglect of older people.
