Small American Towns have to Disband Police Departments Due to Hiring Difficulties

Post Date: September 12, 2023

Across America, small police departments are disbanding because of their struggle to find police officers to fill positions in their districts. And as a result, this is causing more Police Chiefs to resign their positions due to this struggle.

There is a vast decrease in people applying to be police officers, and more officers are retiring or resigning at a tremendous rate. Agencies of all sizes are struggling to fill open positions. But the problem is especially dire in smaller communities that can’t match the pay and incentives offered by bigger places.

There is no doubt the shortage can be blamed on both the COVID pandemic, and the major reason is the murder of George Floyd by a police officer. The departments that are being forced to disband are turning over their police work to the county sheriff’s offices, neighboring towns or their state police departments.
