January African American/Black Holidays

Post Date: January 2, 2024

The Month of January is Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. The Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act was passed by Congress in 2000. It was about a decade later when then, President Barack Obama proclaimed January as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. The month of January seemed fitting, because it was in January when Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that played a crucial role in the freedom of more than 4 million slaves on the 1st of January in 1863.

January 1 is the Emancipation Proclamation anniversary. President Lincoln signed this document in 1863, which proclaimed that all slaves who were living in Confederate states that rebelled against freeing their slaves had to free all slaves. Period!

January 5 is George Washington Carver Day. Dr. Carver was awarded the Roosevelt Medal in 1939 for saving Southern agriculture, (which was later instrumental in feeding the United States during World War II). For this reason, Dr. Carver’s hometown was made a historic site upon his death on Jan. 5, 1943. During the 79th Congress, Public Law 290 was passed to designate January 5th of each year as George Washington Carver Recognition Day.

January 17, 2022 (every third Monday of January) is Martin Luther King Day, commemorating the birth of Martin Luther King, Jr., the recipient of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize and an activist for nonviolent social change until his assassination in 1968.
