The Civil Rights Office of HHS Reached Agreement with the Hillsborough Department of Fire and Rescue in Florida to Improve Access to Care for Communities of Color

Post Date: March 8, 2023

This reconciliation arose from complaints of discrimination, whereby the paramedics there were refusing to administer the proper health care or ambulance transport of African-Americans and other people of color, because they assumed [based on their race and where they lived] that the persons would not, or could not pay for the health care or ambulance services rendered.

The agreement was reached on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, between the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office for Civil Rights (OCR) and Hillsborough County Fire and Rescue which indicates that department has to implement corrective steps to ensure that communities of color would have access to the proper health care services, the same as anyone else would have, regardless of their race or the communities where they reside.

In our society today, we hear of things like this all too often. In 2023, you would think that things have gotten better. The issue with stereotyping based on an individual’s race or where they live in certain communities is such a stigma. We have to continue to hope and pray that one day things will get better.
